Photographic series by Pia Pivec and Heiko Tischler for an upcoming exhibition in Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo.
This collaborative project explores a poetic visual dialogue between Japan and Austria. Through surreal double exposures and minimalist black-and-white photography, Shadow Spaces investigates the interplay of light, structure, and cultural memory.

The double exposures merge urban and natural landscapes. Japanese temples and gardens with Styrian vineyards and architecture — creating dreamlike compositions that dissolve the boundaries of space and time. These visual pairings open new perspectives on tradition, impermanence, and the layered nature of identity.
In contrast, a series of analog black-and-white photographs captures quiet, contemplative moments. Stripped of color, they focus on form, light, and shadow, offering a still, meditative counterbalance to the complexity of the layered images.
Together, the works trace a journey between clarity and abstraction, presence and ephemerality — reflecting a shared aesthetic sensitivity rooted in both cultures.
